Description
1846-O Seated Half, AU55
WB-106, Rare Large (Tall) Date
1846-O 50C Tall Date AU55 PCGS. WB-106, Die Pair 22, R.4.
From the personal collection of Dick Osburn. The 1846 New Orleans
Large (Tall) Date is a rare issue, with PCGS showing just three
finer examples from all varieties combined -- one in AU58, and two
MS62 coins, in addition to this single AU55 piece (7/14). A Choice
AU example, it displays attractive, lilac-and-gold patina on the
obverse, with a blending of the same hues on the reverse merging
into silver-gray central devices. The bold strike remains on both
sides with luster surrounding the devices. Only minor weakness at
the stars and a few unimportant abrasions that require
magnification for notice are seen. This die pair was the third and final use of the reverse die, and numerous heavy cracks at the legend are visible, indicative of the extensive die use. The PCGS population has not changed in the past five years, suggesting few new specimens remain to be found of this variety or any other.
