Description

Rare 1847-O MS63 Doubled Die Obverse Half Dollar

1847-O 50C MS63 PCGS. WB-104. Doubled Die Obverse (not indicated on insert). The doubling is most easily seen on the left side of the rock, the ribbon lower left of the shield, Liberty's left (facing) hand, and on the leftmost shield lines. While relatively easy to locate in lower grades, this variety is very challenging in Mint State, rated a high R.7 by Wiley and Bugert (1993). The partially prooflike fields highlight the relatively well impressed devices, and variegated cobalt-blue, lavender, and reddish-gold patina bathes both sides. A few unobtrusive handling marks limit the grade. Population: 8 in 63 for the issue, 4 finer (9/09).(Registry values: N1793)
