Description

1849 Seated Half Dollar, MS62
Among 10 No Motto Halves
With a Gold CAC Sticker

1849 50C WB-101, MS62 PCGS. Gold CAC. Light silver-gray patina delicately drapes this splendid half dollar with glints of golden-tan and powder-blue. The surfaces are indisputably high-end for the assigned numeric grade, showing no overly distracting abrasions. The obverse displays sharply struck centers with minor peripheral softness, while the reverse is boldly defined throughout. Two tiny reeding marks on Liberty's left (facing) hand will identify this coin in future appearances.

Variety: WB-101, Normal Date. Most die pairs fall under this attribution.

Population Data (9/15): The PCGS Population Report shows nine MS62 submissions and 44 finer. NGC counts seven in this grade with 33 finer . This is the only 1849 with a gold CAC approval sticker and one of 10 such in all grades among all No Motto halves.

Heritage Commentary: CAC believes the quality of this No Motto half dollar exceeds the grade awarded by PCGS, and it is hard to disagree. In fact, even after close examination it is difficult to fathom what kind of perceived issues prevented a higher grade. From a mintage of 1.2 million coins.

Provenance: Albert W. Savage Sale (Stack's, 10/1997), lot 682.
