Description
Dramatically Doubled Date 1849 Half Dollar
1849/49 VF 30 Cleaned. Dramatically Doubled Date. Breen-4816. One of the great rarities for variety collectors among Seated halves. Breen states that he had seen fewer than six pieces to date (1988), and the Wiley-Bugert text lists the variety as R.7 in VF condition. The first date punching was done far to the left, then corrected. But before the digits were finally entered in their proper position, part of a 9 was punched into the rock, and another down in the denticles--that makes four partial or complete number 9s on this one coin--possibly a modern indoor record. The coin was cleaned at one time but has since retoned a deep blue with some lighter golden accents.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24HE, PCGS# 6262, GSID# 6267)
