Description
1851 Gem Seated Half--Second Rarest Issue In The Series
1851 50C MS65 NGC. WB-103, R.7 in Uncirculated. In our recent Long Beach Sale, we offered a PCGS graded MS65 example of this date. Now, we have a second example in Gem condition. For those unfamiliar with Seated halves, the 1851 is considered the second rarest issue in the series by Dick Osburn, second only to the legendary 1878-S. When we offered Tommy Dorathy's collection of Seated halves in October 2001, he had accumulated three AU or MS examples of this date--perhaps he knew something as a collector the rest of us have overlooked. This is a brilliant, fully struck example that has bright, lightly striated obverse fields. There are no mentionable marks on either side of this remarkable Seated half rarity. Population: 3 in 65, 1 finer (2/05).(#6266) (Registry values: N4719)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24HJ, PCGS# 6266, GSID# 6269)
