Description
One of the Finest Known 1851-O Halves
1851-O 50C MS64 PCGS. Ex: Eliasberg. An even finer example of this scarce issue, this piece has speckled blue-gray obverse toning with much underlying mint brilliance evident. The reverse does not have the deep speckles of color but rather is noteworthy for its shimmering mint luster and only secondarily does one notice the deeper toning around the periphery. Sharply struck throughout and problem-free. Only five pieces have been certified in higher condition with eight in this grade by both of the major services (7/01).Ex: Nicholas Petry Collection (S.H. and H. Chapman, 5/10/1893); J.M. Clapp; John H. Clapp; Clapp Estate, (1942), to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr.; Eliasberg II (Bowers and Merena, 4/97), lot 1952.
From the Richard Genaitis Collection.
