Very Rare Gem 1852 Half
1852 MS 65 PCGS. Only 77,130 pieces were produced in this year with a great many of these melted in 1853 after the 7% weight reduction went into effect for all subsidiary silver coins. As a result, examples are scarce in all grades with Mint State pieces rating an R.5 according Wiley and Bugert. This is the first gem we have handled in at least six years. The sharply struck features are draped in an even layer of gray-rose patina that deepens just a bit in the exergual area on the lower obverse. Modest, satiny luster is seen beneath the light patina. Population: 1 in 65, only 1 finer (8/98).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24HL, PCGS# 6268, GSID# 6270)
