Description

1853 Arrows and Rays Half Dollar, MS63
An Excellent Type Coin

1853 50C Arrows and Rays MS63 PCGS. While circulated examples of the 1853 Arrows and Rays half dollar can be located with little difficulty, Mint State examples are another matter. Inspection of PCGS and NGC population data indicate a surprising number of examples in the MS62 through MS64 levels, probably resulting from resubmissions in the hope of attaining a higher grade. In other words, coins in these grades are likely scarcer than the population reports indicate. The lustrous silver-gray surfaces of this Select example exhibit well-struck design elements and both sides reveal fewer marks than what might be expected for the designated grade. A few light roller marks are visible on Liberty's chest. This is an excellent choice for a type collection.
