Description
1853 Arrows and Rays Half, MS64
Multicolored Toning and Sharply Defined
1853 50C Arrows and Rays MS64 PCGS. After the weight
reduction of the silver half dime through half dollar of 1853 --
signified by the addition of Arrows and Rays to the obverse and
reverse, respectively, of the quarter and half dollar, and by the
addition of Rays to the obverse of the half dime and dime -- silver
coins once again began to circulate. Neil Carothers wrote in
Fractional Currency (1930) that there was confusion at the
time, with some people believing that the United States was going
to abandon bimetallism in favor of a gold standard, while others
objected to any "debasement" of the smaller silver coins.Only about 3.5 million examples of the 1853 Arrows and Rays half dollar were made, an amount less than one-fourth of the huge quarter mintage of the same issue. This beautifully toned, highly lustrous example is sharply struck throughout. The only mentionable mark is in the area of Liberty's lower neck.(Registry values: N4719)
