Description

1856 MS 65 PCGS. Even though close to a million half dollars were struck in 1856, this is a very scarce and overlooked issue. This is the first mint state example we have offered in more than four years. In gem condition it stands as one of the finest pieces known, and is possibly bettered only by one MS 66 piece certified by NGC (10/95). What sets this piece apart from many other No Motto halves are its unquestionably original surfaces. The obverse is almost brilliant with speckles of deep brown and russet scattered about the rim on that side. The reverse, on the other hand, shows a light, even layer of golden-brown patina across that side with some deepening of color at the margin. The central design motifs are sharply struck but the peripheral stars are weak. Sparkling mint luster covers the surfaces and adds even more to the overall attractiveness of the coin. Population: 4 in 65, none are finer (11/95).
