Lovely Near-Gem 1856 Seated Half
1856 MS 64 NGC. Even though close to a million half-dollars were struck in 1856, this is a very scarce and overlooked issue. This is only the second mint state example we have offered in more than four years. In choice condition it stands as one of the finest pieces known, and is possibly bettered only by one MS 66 piece certified by NGC. What sets this piece apart from many other No Motto halves is its unquestionably original surfaces. Both sides are essentially brilliant with only a hint of patination. The central design motifs and the peripheral stars are somewhat weak. Population: 5 in 64, 1 is finer (12/96).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24HN, PCGS# 6287, GSID# 6274)
