Description

Finest Known 1856-S Half Dollar

1856-S MS 63 NGC. To date, this is the finest example graded of this issue. As of 6/95, the finest examples seen by PCGS were 3 MS 62s. Until this coin came along, the best coins seen by NGC merited only the AU grade. This issue is unpriced in Coin World Trends and the Coin Dealer Newsletter Quarterly, indicating the extreme rarity of this date in MS 63 and better grades. The example we offer here is fully lustrous, well struck, barely toned, and most important, it looks nice. It is always exciting to offer a coin to the collecting community that seems to be the finest known, especially after so many coins have passed through the grading services. If nothing else, we can all rest assured that we haven't seen everything yet. Many rare and exciting coins still await in the numismatic netherlands.
