Description
Countermarked 1859-O Half
1859-O 50C --Countermarked--ANACS. AU Details, Net VF20. WB-103. Errant 9 in Rock. This is a pretty sporty coin. The scarcest variety of the year is countermarked with a clear, distinct countermark: CHAS. WENDELL. Wendell was a Chicago jeweler and two variants of his countermarks are known today, this one and one that says CHAS. WENDELL / JEWELER. In the latest edition of Brunk, 16 pieces are listed, all of which are either Dimes or Quarters. Lightly toned on each side with the obverse being several shades deeper in hue than the reverse. The only surface impairments (other than the countermark) are a couple of scratches to the right of the eagle's head on the reverse. From the Tommy Dorathy Collection of Seated Halves.
