Description

Very Scarce MS 64 1860-S Half Dollar

1860-S 50C MS 64 NGC. A scarce issue in mint condition, this is only the third Uncirculated piece we have offered at public auction in the past ten years. It is by far the finest of those offered, and is, in fact, one of the finest pieces extant. Only one MS 64 has been certified by PCGS, while 5 show on the NGC Census Report, but we suspect that several of those may be resubmissions. This is a very sharply struck piece whose only area of weakness is a slight softness of strike on the eagle's left (facing) leg. Both sides are covered with speckled, deep gray and rust colored toning with strong underlying satiny luster. Very few abrasions are present, the surfaces are actually clean enough to warrant consideration as a Gem, and the couple of marks that are present are well concealed by the rich tonal qualities.
From the Richard Weiss Collection.
