Description

1861 Half Dollar, MS66
Fully Struck and Brilliant
None Finer at PCGS

1861 50C WB-101 MS66 PCGS Secure. The 1861 half dollar claims a substantial mintage in excess of 2.8 million coins. A lucrative trade developed in the early 1850s whereby subsidiary silver coins, including half dollars, could profitably be exported to Canada and Latin America under certain conditions. Export and hoarding ramped up after the breakout of the Civil War. These factors (mintage, hoarding, export) contribute to the availability of the 1861 Seated half dollar in grades as high as MS64 and even MS65. The issue becomes conditionally rare in MS66.

This fully struck Premium Gem maintains complete mint brilliance, with both sides awash in swirling luster. Abrasions are scant and few are useful for pedigree purposes. There are a couple of ticks above the right (facing) wing and another above 86 in the date. A high-end Registry Set offering. Population: 21 in 66 (4 in 66+), 0 finer (10/18).
