Description

Rare Confederate Half-Dollar

1861 Confederate Restrike AU 50. Breen-8002. One of the 500 restrikes produced by Scott & Co. These pieces were overstruck on 1861 half dollars that had their reverses planed off. When struck with the original Confederate reverse, the obverse of each of these lost some of the original detailing from the force used to strike the reverse. This piece shows that loss of detail also, and overall the coin is almost untoned with just the slightest hint of color and only a trace of handling. A historically important reminder of "what could have been" in the turbulent days of the Civil War.
