Description

1861-O AU 50. Breen-4906, Beistle 5-D, the "Cracked Confederate Obverse." In 1861, the New Orleans Mint struck half dollars under the auspices of the Federal government, the State of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. Although the majority of the pieces were struck by the South, the only ones conclusively identifiable as such are those from this obverse die, which exhibits a die crack running from the rim through the nose of Liberty. This die was used to strike the four Confederate half dollar proofs. Afterward, the obverse die was left in the press and a Federal reverse die inserted in place of the Confederate die, hence the identifiable issues. This piece exhibits the diagnostic die crack at the head, as well as the subsequent cracks at the foot and base of Liberty. Generous luster remains, and the wear is even and minimal. An exciting piece of Civil War memorabilia as well as a historic coin.
