Description

Richly Toned 1861-O Half, Impressive MS 66 Quality

1861-O 50C MS 66 PCGS. The 1861-O half dollar is one of the most important half dollar issues from the New Orleans Mint. The 2.5 million pieces produced were split, albeit unevenly, between the federal government, the state of Louisiana, and the Confederacy. Despite references to die cracks and die linkage, there is no conclusive way to differentiate between coins from each of these issues. Nevertheless, the beauty and importance of this Gem should be obvious to advanced collectors. Both sides are draped in swirling frosty luster over which lies tan-gray toning. A few whispers of electric-blue color are also intermingled throughout, but the surfaces are silent on the subject of bothersome abrasions. Slight striking softness is confined to the lower reverse over the arrow feather and the eagle's left (facing) talon. This coin is one of the three finest examples known to NGC and PCGS (7/00).
