Description

1862 Half Dollar, MS64
Low-Mintage, Hoarded Civil War Issue

1862 50C MS64 NGC. CAC. Following a Philadelphia mintage of more than 2.9 million Seated halves in 1861, the Mint struck just 253,000 pieces in 1862, most of which were soon pulled from circulation into Civil War silver hoards. This is a lightly toned and scarce, near-Gem example of the issue, with a blush of russet-gold toning over the lilac-silver and powder-gray surfaces. Strong mint luster shines through on both sides. The population reports for both PCGS and NGC confirm the Mint State scarcity of the 1862. CAC endorsed. Census: 16 in 64 (3 in 64 ★ ), 9 finer. CAC: 5 in 64, 5 finer (4/16).
