Description

1862 Seated Half, MS67
Rich Copper-Pink Patina

1862 50C MS67 NGC. CAC. This 1862 Seated half dollar was among the roughly quarter-million examples struck during the year, in which the horrid Civil War raged throughout the North, East, and South of the United States. Most gold and silver coins of any denomination were squirreled away like good nuts for a hard winter; few circulated. However this Superb Gem took its route to such incredible preservation, today it ranks as one of the two finest certified at NGC and PCGS combined. Both sides feature a complement of rich copper-pink patina over surfaces that are uniformly well-struck and free of all but the most minuscule contact marks. Signs of die clashing appear in the right (facing) obverse field under Liberty's elbow. A remarkable coin for the Seated half specialist. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (3/13).
