Description

Elusive 1862-S Seated Half, MS63

1862-S 50C MS63 PCGS. This is an example of WB-5, with a Weak 6 date logotype and a Large S mintmark. "For all their interesting merits, 1862-S half dollars are vastly under-appreciated." Those words are from Bill Bugert in A Register of Liberty Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Volume I. Such underappreciated coins are often the best targets of wise collectors, and this piece presents an important opportunity. The last two auction appearances of a Mint State piece in any of our sales were an MS64 that we sold in June 2008 and an MS62 that we offered in April 2006. In fact, this lovely gold-toned piece is only the 15th Mint State example of the issue that we have presented since 1993. It is boldly detailed with excellent eye appeal. Population: 7 in 63, 13 finer (2/10).(Registry values: N1793)
