Description

Scarce 1863-S Half Dollar, MS64

1863-S $5 MS64 NGC. On the east coast, silver and gold coinage was widely hoarded during the tumultuous years of the Civil War. While it would not be accurate to say that the west coast was unaffected by that conflict, the effect on circulating coinage in that region of the country was not the same. Most of the business strike silver and gold coinage from the San Francisco mint went into circulation and stayed there. This piece is an exception and it shows bright, lustrous surfaces that are largely unaffected by coin-to-coin contact. The only defect that is worthy of mention is localized striking weakness that is limited to stars 4-7 on the obverse. Population: 10 in 64, 3 finer (1/05).(#6310) (Registry values: N2998)
