Description

Razor Sharp 1864 MS 67 Half Dollar

1864 MS 67 NGC. Ex: Dawson. A scarce, heavily melted issue that can be located from time to time at the uncirculated level, although most of the known examples are low-end, often cleaned pieces found in a hoard in Guatemala in the 1950s. This impeccable, razor sharp specimen is light years ahead of the hoard coins, being toned in thin crescents of reddish-gold about each side and brilliant through the centers. A few shallow blemishes on either side of the date are only noticeable under magnification. The reverse appears to be struck from freshly polished, striated dies and is remarkably frosty on the eagle. Population: 2 in 67, none finer (6/98).
