Description

1864 50C MS 67 PCGS. An elusive Civil War issue in all grades, the 1864 suffered the ravages of widespread hoarding, extensive exportation, and heavy melting. While an AU or lower Mint State specimen should be considered quite a find, the Superb Gem piece that we offer here is of the utmost rarity. Despite noticeable striations, the fields are not reflective but carry a thinner veil of mint frost than the richly endowed devices. The strike is, as usual, razor sharp and leaves no feather, star center, or gown line incomplete. While the majority of the surfaces are lightly toned, light blushes of golden-russet toning are scattered about selected areas of the peripheries. Mint State type collectors, as well as Seated half dollar enthusiasts, should carefully consider this lovely numismatic jewel. Population: 2 in 67, none finer.
