Description

1865-S MS 63. A very rare half dollar, struck toward the end of the Civil War, and apparently widely melted or shipped overseas. Most of the AU-BU coins known of this and several other S-mints from the 1860s came from a hoard found in Guatemala in the 1950s. We do not know if that is the provenance of this particular coin as it lacks the scrubbed appearance of most of the pieces that came from that hoard. The surfaces of this coin are toned a heavy, almost opaque, sea-green with gray overtones. Sharply struck and showing no obvious or distracting marks on either side.
