Description

1866-S Seated Half, Attractive MS63
WB-101, Final No-Motto Issue

1866-S 50C No Motto, Small Thin S, WB-101, Die Pair 1, R.4, MS63 PCGS. CAC. Although the mandate to add the motto IN GOD WE TRUST was in place, the proper dies were not. Eager to issue half dollars into commerce, the San Francisco Mint struck 60,000 No Motto halves. A single die pair accomplished the entire mintage. Even in those days, collectors and dealers recognized the significance the missing motto. As a result, more examples of the issue were saved than would otherwise be expected. Still, the 1866-S No Motto is scarce-to-rare in Uncirculated grades and carefully preserved pieces command a premium.

This example shows few distractions. The frosty surfaces are above average for the grade with only scattered light marks that require magnification to view. Mint luster glows beneath olive-gold and tan toning. The strike is not quite full but sharp on the star centers and central motifs. Only Liberty's hair strands and the eagle's left talon show blending of detail. We expect persistent competition among bidders when this CAC-endorsed No Motto comes up for bid. Population: 6 in 63, 7 finer. CAC: 3 in 63, 2 finer (5/16).
