Description
Choice XF 1866-S No Motto Half
1866-S 50C No Motto XF45 PCGS. Most 1866-S half dollar production occurred after the arrival of a Motto reverse die. It was likely shipped via Panama from the Philadelphia Mint, since no cross-country railroad route yet existed. Only 60,000 pieces were struck without the motto, coined from a leftover reverse die. A majority of the couple hundred survivors are in VF or lower grades (PCGS has graded two pieces as AG3). This is a problem-free stone-gray example with attractive unblemished surfaces.(Registry values: N991)Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24JH, PCGS# 6315, GSID# 6352)
