1870-CC Half Dollar, Attractive AU53
Famed Carson City Rarity
From The Battle Born Collection

1870-CC 50C WB-101, Die Pair 5, R.6, AU53 PCGS. Ex: Battle Born Collection. Although this 1870-CC half dollar carries the important Battle Born Collection pedigree, it is not the famous 1870-CC featured in the Stack's Bowers 2012 sale of the primary Battle Born Carson City collection. The coin from that sale was then-graded MS62 NGC -- previously held in the Reed Hawn/James Pryor/Dick Osburn collections. Today, that coin ranks as the finest-known 1870-CC half dollar and currently resides in a MS64 PCGS holder.

The present coin is apparently a duplicate from the Battle Born Collection, but that is no small feat since it is an exceptional PCGS AU53 example. Heritage sold this very coin 25 years ago as Lot 6003 in our Philadelphia Signature auction (8/2000), where it was then described as "the second-finest certified 1870-CC half dollar, AU50 PCGS." The passage of years means it can no longer claim such a lofty status, yet it remains within the top dozen examples certified by PCGS and continues to exhibit attractive, partially lustrous reddish-gold surfaces. Marks are few and the sharp strike remains intact. A few grade-defining light abrasions exist in the right obverse field. Still, any About Uncirculated 1870-CC is a significant relic from the Carson City Mint's first year of coining operations. This Ex: Battle Born coin is sure to inspire interest from the legions of Carson City collectors and Seated half dollar specialists. PCGS Population: 5 in 53, 7 finer (6/25).
