Description

Choice XF 1870-CC Half Dollar

1870-CC XF 45 PCGS. WB-101. No Drapery variety. Lovely, even, original gunmetal- gray surfaces with a slight two-tone appearance on the obverse. The strike is sharp, while the letters BER in LIBERTY (which are typically weak) are boldly detailed. The surfaces are nearly perfect and this is a high-end, appealing example of this rare date.
The 1870-CC is probably the most challenging Carson City half dollar in terms of overall rarity (although the 1878-CC is a close rival), and it is unquestionably the rarest in high grades. The finest known is the Pryor: 204 coin that has been graded from MS 60 to MS 62 by various experts. The '70-CC is extremely rare in About Uncirculated with just three to five pieces known. It is a Rarity-6 issue in Extremely Fine with an estimated population of 12-15 examples, including a number that are not choice. This is an important coin that should see considerable attention from half dollar collectors.
From the Nevada Collection.
