Description

Lustrous AU53 1871-CC Seated Half

1871-CC 50C AU53 NGC. A rare issue from the second year of operation of the Carson City Mint, the 1871-CC is rated R.5 by Seated half pundits Wiley and Bugert in XF-AU grades. While this coin does not show a repunched final digit in the date, an obverse with that feature was paired, apparently with this same reverse, to produce some one-sided proofs or, possibly, some two-sided branch mint proofs. The reverse, left over from 1870, is distinguished by a die crack that joins the final A in AMERICA with the topmost arrowhead, as well as a crack through the MER, both of which are plain on this silver-gray example. Some die doubling is also noted on the reverse, most visible through DOL. and RICA. Considerable luster remains on each side of this attractive, problem-free piece, a choice find for Seated Liberty specialists.(Registry values: N1793)
