Description

Desirable Borderline Uncirculated 1871-CC Half Dollar

1871-CC AU 58 PCGS. WB-101. Normal date; large mintmark. The second year of Carson City half dollar production and an even more difficult issue than its mintage of 159,950 pieces would suggest, especially in lesser worn grades. The surfaces are lustrous with a slightly prooflike finish in the obverse fields and light golden-gray color. The only abrasion remotely worthy of mention is a milling mark below star 1. While there is some minor friction noted on the high spots, this coin doesn't have any real "wear." Very probably a Condition Census example of this rare date; we have seen only one other About Uncirculated that compares to this piece (in a Louisiana collection) and are aware of a small number of Uncirculated coins.
This is a rare issue in all grades and it becomes quite challenging in About Uncirculated. In Mint State, the 1871-CC half dollar is a great rarity with just three or four known. In recent years, there have only been two examples offered for sale that were finer than the example from the Nevada Collection. These are led by the Noblet specimen (Bowers and Merena, 1/99), lot 160; Pryor: 208 which is now in a PCGS MS 64 holder after having been graded MS 63 by PCGS in its last two auction appearances; and Eliasberg: 2015, which appears to have later been graded MS 60 by PCGS and MS 61 by NGC.
From the Nevada Collection.
