Description

Original 1872-CC Half, XF40

1872-CC 50C XF40 PCGS. More than a quarter million halves were struck in Carson City in 1872, and yet pieces above XF are rarely encountered. Such were the needs of smaller denomination coins in the West in the 1870s. As with almost all known 1872-CC halves, this piece shows softer details on the obverse than the reverse. The surfaces appear totally original, as if it were just pulled from circulation. The exposed areas on each side are light gray with a reddish undertone, and the devices and recesses of the design are charcoal gray. An impressive coin for this scarce CC date.(Registry values: N991)
