Finest Known 1873 Arrows Half-Dollar

1873 Arrows MS 66 NGC. After Senator Sherman and Representative Kelly included a metric provision in the Mint Act of 1873, they believed that many of the countries in the Western World would begin to circulate American subsidiary coinage, and it would become an integral part of what he envisioned as a universal coinage system. This was not to be, of course, but the Mint dutifully added arrows to the denominations affected by the metric provision, and today numismatics is left with Sherman and Kelly's legacy. This is an essentially brilliant example that shows a hint of "album" toning at the borders. The surfaces are satiny with an excellent strike although some highpoint definition is incomplete. As the grade would indicate, there are virtually no distracting marks on either side of this attractive type piece. This is the finest example thus far certified by both services combined (8/97).
