Description

1873 No Arrows Half, Rare Open 3 Variety

1873 50C Open 3 XF40 PCGS. The rarity of this issue is such that the 2001 Guide Book does not list a single price below the MS60 grade level, and at that level of preservation the price is $12,500. Although Mint records indicate that 214,200 Open 3 Half Dollars were produced, most of these coins were undoubtedly melted to provide silver for the Arrows coinage of this same year. This is a richly toned survivor whose surfaces are drenched in olive-charcoal patina. There are remarkably few abrasions for a circulated example, particularly on the obverse, and the devices display only light, even wear. Sure to be of interest to Seated Half Dollar specialists. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just 18 coins in all grades, a mere five of which grade finer than this XF representative (7/01).
