MS 65 NGC 1873-CC Arrows Seated Half, Among the Finest Known Survivors
1873-CC 50C Arrows MS 65 NGC. Large Mintmark. Breen-4980, WB-103. Ex: Pittman. The 1873-CC Arrows is the first of only six Seated half dollars that the Carson City Mint produced at the weight of 12.50 grams. The rarest coin in this group is the 1878-CC, followed by the 1874-CC Arrows and the 1873-CC Arrows. In reality, the difference in rarity between the latter two issues is nearly imperceptible, particularly in the preferred Mint State grades. This is a fully original Gem with rich olive-copper toning that lightens to near-brilliance around a few of the obverse devices. The frosty luster provides appreciable cartwheel effects and there are no areas of noticeable striking incompleteness. Both advanced type collectors and Carson City specialists should take a keen interest in this coin.Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection (Akers, 5/98), lot 1579, where it realized $38,500.
