Condition Census 1873-CC No Arrows Half Dollar

1873-CC No Arrows MS 64 PCGS. WB-101. Blazing-white with a few tiny areas of toning visible on both sides. The features are very well struck with complete definition on Liberty's head and the eagle's wings; the surfaces are fully frosty with a slight semi-matte texture in the fields. A beautiful coin and certainly a highlight of this very impressive run of Carson City half dollars.
The 1873-CC No Arrows half dollar is considerably scarcer than its With Arrows counterpart, especially in Mint State. The combined population figures at PCGS and NGC show a total of seven Mint State 1873-CC halves as of June, 1999. This figure is almost certainly inflated by regrades, and the actual number of distinct specimens is more likely in the area of four or five pieces. The present example is either the second or third finest known. PCGS has graded two in MS 66 while NGC has recorded one in this grade. Given the rarity of this date, it seems unlikely that there are three MS 66s and this may, in fact, represent the same coin. The finest that we are aware of is Bolen: 5924, ex: Garrett (Stack's, 3/76), lot 354, where it sold for a then-incredible $30,000, and later sold by us in the 1999 Central States Sale for $69,000. The Pryor: 216 coin, later graded MS 63 by NGC, is the only comparable example to be sold at public auction in the last two decades.
