Condition Census 1876-S Half

1876-S 50C MS 66 NGC. From 1875 through 1877, the San Francisco Mint delivered staggering numbers of half dollars to help redress the nation's currency shortage that resulted from the outbreak of the Civil War. With a mintage of 4.5 million pieces, the 1876-S is an understandably common coin in lower grades. At the MS 66 level, however, the three examples known to NGC and PCGS are the finest certified survivors available to today's specialists (10/00). A thickly frosted, radiant Gem, both sides are lightly toned in golden-russet peripheral iridescence. Crisp striking definition and pristine features are noted throughout. There are numerous scratches on the back of the NGC holder.
