Description

1877 Half Dollar, Lightly Toned Gem

1877 50C Closed Bud, WB-103, MS65 PCGS. The resumption of specie payments in the mid-1870s explains the elevated production totals for the 1875 through 1878 half dollar issues. More than 8.3 million pieces were struck in 1877, the second-highest mintage in the series after the 1876. Nevertheless, Gems are very scarce. This example is lightly toned in golden-violet and ice-blue color with lively luster underneath. Each side is well-defined with few areas of incompleteness. A long, vertical scratch is seen on the back of the holder.
