    1877-S Half Dollar, Reflective MS66
    Beautifully Toned Type Coin
    Unlisted Die Pair

1877-S 50C Closed Bud, Very Small S, WB-104, Die Pair Unlisted, MS66 PCGS. CAC. In A Register of Seated Half Dollar Varieties, Bill Bugert writes: "I believe there are more 1876-S and 1877-S die marriages yet to be discovered. There are just too many dies and too high a mintage for me to feel confident all the 1877-S die marriages have been discovered and documented." We believe this piece represents a new variety. The reverse matches Bugert's Reverse X, but while the obverse date placement is similar to that of Obverse 23 (the usual obverse for Reverse X), the 1 is a trifle nearer the rock base and none of the other die markers are present. The drapery at the elbow is mostly lapped away, and the foot support is full. There is a short, horizontal die line in the recess of the drapery below Liberty's left (facing) breast, immediately left of the stomach swell. Other attributes of this high-end type coin include semiprooflike fields and well-struck design elements. Gold, mint-green, violet, and blue toning forms concentric circles on each side. Population: 28 in 66 (1 in 66+), 1 finer. CAC: 7 in 66, 2 finer (1/18).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.

This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
