Description

Superlative 1877-S Half Dollar, MS67

1877-S 50C MS67 NGC. San Francisco minted a generous 5,356,000 half dollars in 1877, the highest total of Seated halves for any year from that mint. Most 1877-S certified half dollars are graded AU58 through MS64, with a small number of Gems and Premium Gems. But only three pieces are classified Superb Gem by NGC, with none finer, and PCGS has graded a single MS67 (8/08). This piece not only tops the certified population, but it also displays beautiful toning. A sunset blaze of crimson dominates both surfaces, with jade, russet, and copper highlights surrounding essentially untoned centers. Clean, well struck surfaces prevail. This is an uncommon opportunity for the discriminating Seated Liberty or type collector.
