Description
Outstanding Gem 1878-CC Half Dollar--Tied For Finest Known
1878-CC MS 65 PCGS. There are several important similarities between this and the legendary 1878-S half dollar. Both are rare, low mintage coins whose production was prematurely halted so the Mint could devote its full time energies to churning out millions of silver dollars to satisfy Western mining interests' need for an outlet for its silver bullion. Both issues are rare in all grades and extremely so in mint condition. Only 6 pieces have been certified in the various mint state grades and this piece is tied for finest known honors as graded by PCGS (7/98). The NGC MS 65 coin currently listed is this piece, which was recently "crossed over." The other gem example and only real competitor with this remarkable coin is Ex: Eliasberg. That memorable piece fetched an equally memorable price of $77,000 (before the buyer's fee was added). The devices are fully struck with superb, sparkling mint luster. Just a slight accent of pale golden-rose patina is seen over each side. An impressive example of this rare, key date issue in the Seated half dollar series.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 24KP, PCGS# 6359, GSID# 6375)
