Description
1878-S Seated Liberty Half Dollar, AG3
Only 12,000 Pieces Struck
Rare Series Key
1878-S 50C WB-101, Die Pair 1, R.5, AG3 PCGS Secure. From a
meager mintage of just 12,000 pieces, the 1878-S Seated Liberty
half dollar is an elusive key issue, and collectors prize examples
in all grades and conditions. The San Francisco Mint had to
allocate most of its resources to silver dollar production in 1878,
because of the provisions of the Bland-Allison Act, accounting for
the limited mintage of other silver issues. Since there was almost
no interest in collecting branch mint issues at the time few, if
any, high-quality specimens were saved for numismatic purposes.
Most survivors seen today are well-worn and heavily abraded. Randy
Wiley and Bill Bugert estimate about 60 examples are extant in all
grades. The present coin shows extensive wear on both sides, with the rims and LIBERTY worn smooth. The major devices are nearly complete in outline and the date, most of the legend and mintmark are legible. The lavender-gray surfaces are free of large or distracting abrasions. Housed in a new 30th Anniversary green label holder. Population: 2 in 3, 29 finer (1/18).

The Draped Bust Half Dollars of 1796-1797 by Jon Amato is the culmination of more than 10 years of research into the Draped Bust Small Eagle half dollar series, one of the most coveted type coins in American numismatics and one about which remarkably little has been written.
This work will be the premier reference for 1796-1797 half dollars for years to come. Institutions having an extensive numismatic library or coin cabinet will find it a valuable complement to their holdings, and catalogers charged with writing up specimens for auction can now have an indispensable source of background and pedigree information. Likewise, coin dealers seeking to purchase one or more '96 or '97 half dollars for a client or for inventory, and collectors who own, have owned, or desire to own one will want this important reference work for their libraries.
