    PCGS 1878-S MS 63. A legendary rarity in the Seated half series. The mintage was a mere 12,000 pieces, all struck before the mint's equipment was pressed into full time service producing Morgan dollars. As a result, surviving examples of the half dollars are very rare. They are, as a matter of fact, so rare that this date has even been counterfeited. Breen estimates that perhaps 5 pieces exist today in mint condition with another 20 or so in lower grades. According to the most recent data from the major certification services, only 4 coins have been graded in mint condition. There is one other MS 63 certified by PCGS with 1 coin finer. This piece is fully struck with bright prooflike surfaces, as usual, with attractive golden-rose toning over both sides and just a touch of olive at the rims. An exceptional opportunity for the advanced Seated specialist who wants only the finest.
