Description

1879 Seated Half Dollar, MS67+
Among the Finest Certified at PCGS

1879 50C Closed Bud, WB-102, MS67+ PCGS. CAC. Only 4,800 circulation strike half dollars were produced in 1879. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert attribute the low mintage to the implementation of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, but another important factor was the glut of half dollars that were produced by all three mints in 1876 and 1877. A cumulative total of nearly 31.4 million half dollars was produced during the three years prior to 1879. PCGS has seen only two examples that exceed the MS67+ grade of this splendid 1879 half dollar. A medley of steel-blue, ruby-red, and amber-gold toning emerges when viewed under indirect light at an advantageous angle. Pristine fields surround lightly frosted, sharply struck motifs. A short strike-through at Liberty's cheek happened at the Mint. CAC endorsement confirms the Superb Gem technical grade. PCGS Population: 15 in 67 (4 in 67+), 2 finer. CAC 1 in 67+, 0 finer (3/26).
