Description

Pleasing Premium Gem 1879 Half Dollar

1879 50C MS66 PCGS. Breen writes that the Bland-Alison act resulted in a major slowdown in the striking Half Dollars. Thus beginning with the branch mints in 1878 and Philadelphia in 1879, the striking of Half Dollars slowed to a trickle. Philadelphia struck 1,378,400 Half Dollars in 1878; in 1879 that number was reduced to just 5,900. The present example shows the near-prooflike fields that this issue is known for, especially on the reverse. Some light russet and gold color is noted on the peripheries and over Liberty. A few tiny imperfections, notably some minute contact marks in the left obverse field, are mentioned for accuracy. This example has the major eye appeal one expects from a coin of this level. Its low mintage, and the difficulty in finding premium Gem examples like this one, ensure that this lot will command the interest of the Seated Half connoisseur.(#6361) (Registry values: N2998)
