Description

1879 Half Dollar, MS67
Popular, Low-Mintage Date

1879 50C MS67 PCGS. CAC. Despite the low mintage of 4,800 business strikes, the 1879 half dollar is available in most grades. Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (1993) attribute this to their being saved at or near the time of issue by collectors because of anticipated low mintages. The lower production was likely due to the implementation of the Bland-Allison Act of 1878, requiring mints to purchase vast amounts of silver bullion and produce large quantities of Morgan dollars.

While the certified population reveals the 1879 to be abundant in Mint State through the Premium Gem level, MS67 pieces such as the current offering are elusive. Vibrant luster exudes from light silver-gray surfaces, and both sides are fully struck, with the sole exception of the eagle's left (facing) claw. A handful of grade-consistent ticks do not take away from the coin's superior eye appeal. Population: 15 in 67 (1 in 67+), 2 finer (4/13).(Registry values: N1)
