Description

Seldom-Seen Business Strike 1885 Half Dollar, MS65

1885 50C MS65 NGC. The 1885 is a well-known low-mintage date from the 1880s with a mintage of 6,130 strikes for circulation. This is one of the few Gems known. It is also one of the few we have seen that looks like an unequivocal business strike. Often quarters and halves from this decade have mirrored fields that are so deep they can cause confusion with proofs. This piece shows semireflective fields, as one would expect from such a low mintage, but the fields have at least as much cartwheel luster as mirroring. The strike is strong overall, and the only marks of any note are located in the right obverse field. Census: 13 in 65, 3 finer (2/11).(Registry values: N2998)
