Description

1886 Half Dollar, MS65
Low Mintage, Few Finer

1886 50C MS65 NGC. The U.S. Mint focused on silver dollar production during 1886, and half dollar mintages for commerce were confined to 886 proofs and 5,000 business strikes. Mintages of the denomination had been low since the introduction of the Morgan dollar, and Philadelphia-area dealers had become accustomed to securing nice Mint State examples for their customers. Nonetheless, Gems are rare today. The present high-grade specimen has a prooflike obverse and a reverse with cartwheel luster. Well struck and well preserved with a small shallow strike-through above the eagle's head. Census: 8 in 65, 4 finer (6/23).(Registry values: N2998)
