Description

1886 Half Dollar, MS64
Semiprooflike Fields

1886 50C WB-101 MS64 PCGS. Looking more like a Cameo proof than a business strike, this dazzling near-Gem coin displays silver-white surfaces with a translucent vignette of orange-gold toning at the margins on each side. A single obverse die was used for the entire mintage of 5,000 coins struck for circulation plus 886 proofs. Faint die clashing near Liberty's draped elbow confirms this is indeed a business strike. The coin is visually high-end for the grade, and a full strike prevails except for minor incompleteness at Liberty's head and stars 8 and 9. The eagle's left (facing) talon shows slight blending of detail. Only a few wispy lines are visible with a glass. Population: 38 in 64 (1 in 64+), 23 finer (11/24).
