1887 Seated Half, MS63 Deep Prooflike
Sole-Certified DPL Circulation Strike
1887 50C WB-101 MS63 Deep Prooflike NGC. With a circulation
strike mintage of only 5,000 pieces, it is no surprise a few Mint
State 1887 Seated halves have received prooflike designations. This
coin, however, is the sole example we know of to display a Deep
Prooflike grade at either NGC or PCGS. The Select Uncirculated
surfaces are indeed deeply contrasted, with champagne-gold fields
set against boldly frosted central motifs. Colorful iridescence
flickers at the borders. A small gathering of shallow abrasions in
the right obverse field near Liberty's knee accounts for the MS63
DPL assignment. Minor weakness at a few top stars suggest this is
correctly identified as a commercial strike and not a proof.
Although the coin is not listed within the current NGC Census, it
verifies when the cert number is searched on NGC's certification
